Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture: “Can There be an Account of Creativity?”
Wednesday January 15th 2014 at 17:15

Prof. Derek Matravers, Professor of Philosophy, The Open University
Wednesday 15th January 2014,5.15pm – 6.45pm
Followed by a drinks reception
Senior Common Room, St Mary’s University College

Abstract:

Creativity seems, essentially, bringing something out of nothing. Given this, it looks difficult to throw light on its nature. I shall argue that there is something to this claim, and that the standard analysis of creativity is uninformative.

About the Speaker

Derek Matravers was an undergraduate at UCL, and a graduate student at Cambridge where he obtained his PhD in 1991. After three years as a post–doctoral lecturer, he moved to The Open University in 1994. He has published extensively in aesthetics, as well as ethics and the philosophy of mind. His book, Fiction and Narrative, will be published by OUP in May.

Registration

All lectures are free and open to all without registration. Lectures start at 5:15 and last for 50 minutes, with 40 minutes for questions. This is then followed by a wine reception.
